How to safely set your wood heater for a warm morning handover

There is nothing quite like waking up on a frosty winter morning, walking out of your bedroom, and stepping into a living space that is still beautifully warm and inviting. Achieving a successful “overnight burn”—where your fireplace maintains a steady heat and leaves plenty of glowing embers to easily restart the fire the next day—is a simple art that relies on loading your firebox correctly. Before you head to bed, you want to clean out any excess loose ash and build up a robust, roaring bed of red-hot coals using smaller pieces of timber first.

Once your coal bed is intensely hot, pack the firebox tightly with large, thick logs of high-quality hardwood, placing them close together to restrict excessive air gaps. Let the large logs catch fire fully for about 15 to 20 minutes with the air controls wide open until they are charring brightly. Right before you turn in for the night, steadily adjust the unit’s slide dampers down into the low, overnight burn setting. This slows down the airflow just enough to prevent the logs from flashing away in a couple of hours, allowing premium heavy-duty brands like Masport to safely simmer and radiate gentle warmth for up to 8 hours straight.
